Where the Wild Things Are is one of the most beloved pictures books. It's been a favorite among children for decades. Such a classic book makes for a perfect 1st birthday party theme, cake smash and photo shoot! After all what baby wouldn't want to be part of the wild rumpus!!
It's always fun to work a photo shoot around your child's favorite book or other interests! This sweet child thinks the Wild One theme is a great idea! Let's get this photo shoot started!

First, baby "Max" sets off through the morning and the rest of the day and in and out of weeks and almost over a year to where the wild things are. He sets off because he needs to select the perfect outdoor setting where he can be wild to roar a terrible roar and will be free to gnash his terrible teeth and and roll his terrible eyes and show his terrible claws!

Baby "Max" spots the best place in the wood - a secluded area near a lake. He sets up a teepee and starts a bonfire fit for the king.

Baby "Max" decided to come dressed as a wolf. His mother wisely dressed him in layers, allowing for quick outfit changes. Baby "Max" is happy that it's already time to celebrate his first birthday with a cake just the right size to smash!

Baby "Max" says "BE STILL!" attempting to tame his wild cake.

It's time to eat! Baby "Max" now turns a bit shy. and gingerly enjoys his signature smash cake.

Baby "Max" wants to be where someone loves him best of all. He starts his trip back over a year and in and out of weeks and through a day and into the afternoon to find his family.

Photograph flowers on an overcast day.
This creates a soft beautiful light, without hot spots.
Look for backlight.
This will make your flowers glow.

Move in close.
This will make your subject larger in your photo.

Use a reflector.
A flat white material, like a piece of white cardboard, will reflect light back on to your subject.
Avoid distractions.
Keep clutter out of the background.

Use a shallow depth of field.
Keep your flower in focus, but while creating a beautiful blur (or bokeh) in the background.

Make it sharp.
Everyone loves tack sharp images!
Highlight something special.
Find a subject to make the flower the background, like a raindrop, a bumble bee, a butterfly or a humming bird.

Change perspective.
Try laying down and angle your camera upward or angle straight down from directly above.

Add dimension.
Focus through other flowers, leaves or grass.

Bring some flowers inside too.

I love receiving inquires that let me get creative. This week I received a request for an Easter/spring studio session for a nine month old baby boy. I started thinking... grass, eggs, bunny, carrots, watering can, wagon, banners, flowers, Easter basket. I looked around the studio, found a couple useful items and then made a shopping trip to Pottery Barn Kids and Hobby Lobby. I think the studio is ready for baby boys and their Easter pictures! Here are some behind the scenes photos of the studio.
